Description
한국어: 6세기 중엽 신라는 대외적으로 크게 세력을 확장했다. 진흥왕(眞興王, 재위 540-576)은 새로 확보한 영토를 돌아보며, 여러 곳에 비를 세웠다. 북한산신라진흥왕순수비는 그 가운데 하나이다. 553년 신라는 백제로부터 한강 하류지방을 빼앗아 신주(新州)를 설치하였고, 555년 10월에 진흥왕이 이 지역을 돌아보았는데, 이를 기념하여 지금의 서울 종로구 구기동 북한산 비봉에 비를 세운 것이다. 조선시대에 이 비가 무학대사의 비로 알려져 있었는데, 1816년 금석학자 김정희(金正喜, 1786-1856)가 이 비를 조사한 후에 진흥왕순수비임을 밝혀내고, 그 내용을 비 왼쪽면에 기록해 놓았다.
