배첩이란 글씨나 그림에 종이, 비단 등을 붙여 족자·액자·병풍 등을 만들어서 아름다움은 물론 실용성 및 보존성을 높여주는 전통적인 서화처리법을 가리키며, 일제강점기에 들어온 말로 오늘날에는 “표구(表具)”라고도 한다. 배첩장은 조선 전기에 회화를 담당하던 국가기관인 도화서 소속으로 궁중의 서화처리를 전담하던 사람을 말한다.
