1876, pred objavljivanje rata Turskoj nastaju prva zvanična pravila koja će se primenjivati na četničke odrede, kao neku vrstu specijalnih jedinica. Spremajući se za rat, Srbija je u neoslobođene krajeve slala obučene gerilce, kako bi kasnije napredovanje vojske bilo lakše. Ovde nailazimo na sličnost sa uskocima, koji su imali slične zadatke i ciljeve. Prvi četnički vojvoda(turcizam
harambaša
biva zamenjen slovenskom rečju
vojvoda
nastalom od glagola
vojevati
) bio je niški trgovac Nikola Kole Rašić. On je rukovodio četama između Niša i Leskovca, a sam je obrazovao četu od oko 300 ljudi. Njegov zadatak je bio da probije put vojsci i olakša dalje prodiranje na jug. Vojvoda Kole je, u Drugom srpsko-turskom ratu prvi ušao u Leskovac i držao govor oslobođenom narodu. Todor Stanković Nišlija je među prvima organizovao četu koja kasnije ulazi u sastav Dobričkog odreda(pod komandom Miloša S. Milojevića). Toša Stanković će kasnije biti jedan od pregovarača u niškoj tvrđavi o predaji turske vojske. Tanasije Tasko Uzunović je treći istaknuti četnik, koji uspeva da pobegne iz niške tvrđave i priđe Koletu Rašiću, čiji je bio nerazdvojni prijatelj.
