Heaven and Earth, a painting that describes Manichaean cosmology. Hanging scroll, paint and gold on silk, Yüen dynasty (1279–1368 c.e.).

マニ教「宇宙図」：吉田教授が「宇宙図」と呼ぶこの絵画は、現在国内で個人が所蔵している。縦137.1センチ、横56.6センチで、絹布に彩色で描かれている。仏教絵画との比較などから、中国の元（1271～1368年）、またはその前後に、現在の浙江、福建両省など江南地方の絵師が制作したとみられるという。日本に渡った時期などは不明。「宇宙図」では最上部が天国とみられ、その下に太陽と月が描かれている。さらにその下には、教義の特徴でもある円弧で10層に分けられた「天」があり、天使や悪魔の姿のほか、さそり座やうお座など12星座も確認できる。人間が住む地上にはキノコ型にそびえる山「須弥山」があり、最下層は地獄と解釈されるという。
