Description Workers inside Smithfield market 1.jpg |
Workers inside Smithfield Market. This area is now closed off to the public. Smithfield Market is one of the most famous livestock markets in the world. It is located in West Smithfield, one of the more quieter areas of the City of London. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century. The buildings, were designed by City Architect Sir Horace Jones and completed in November 1868 . This building was subsequently destroyed by a major fire in 1958 in which two firemen lost their lives. It was replaced by the current building in 1962. The site has seen much modernising since and is still in use. |
