THOMAS BARDWELL
East Anglia 1704 - 1767 Norwich William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford (1722-1791), in peer's robes, his right hand resting on a table bearing an earl's coronet inscribed with the identity of the sitter lower left: Ld. Strafford oil on canvas 194.3 x 143.5 cm.; 76½ x 56½ in. The sitter was the son of Thomas Wentworth and his wife Anne Johnson. Born in 1722, he married Lady Anne Campbell, daughter of John, 2nd Duke of Argyll on 28th April 1741, and died in 1791. A signed and dated portrait of the sitter by Bardwell from 1749 is in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch, Bowhill (oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in.),1 and he painted three further portraits of the sitter and his wife, as well as a view of Wentworth Castle, between 1750-1752. 1 M.
