Notes | The inscription speaks of the ninth official rank, however, the man bears the insignia ( buzi ) of the seventh rank (Mandarin duck). By the end of the seventeenth century, all rank birds since the Kangxi emperor’s reign (1662-1722), were depicted looking at a sun disk, said to represent the emperor. Mandarin duck was a symbol of marital fidelity and thus loyalty, a noble quality in a government official. Immediately above the image is a horizontal inscription strip containing an imperial order concerning the appointment of Xi Shizuan (?) to the ninth rank official post in the Shandong province. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
