IN THIS HOUSE BUILT BY HIS FATHER WALT WHITMAN WAS BORN IN 1819. HE LIVED HERE 4 YEARS BEFORE HIS FATHER MOVED TO BROOKLYN TO BUILD HOMES. WALT WHITMAN BECAME FIRST A PRINTER, THEN TEACHER, AND THEN A NEWSPAPER FOUNDER AND EDITOR. THE “LONG ISLAND” WHICH HE FOUNDED IS STILL PUBLISHED. HIS MOST FAMOUS POETRY “THE LEAVES OF GRASS” WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN ITS ABBREVIATED FORM IN 1855
