Description
English: Two Vought SB2U-3 Vindicator of Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 241 (VMSB-241) take off from Midway's Eastern Island on a flight between 27 May and 4 June 1942. Plane No. 6 in the foreground (BuNo 2045) was flown on 4 June 1942 by 2nd Lt James H. Marmande with PFC Edby Colvin as gunner. This plane disappeared about 16 km (10 mi) from Midway on the return flight. The plane in the backgound is No. 9, flown by Capt. Leon M. Williamson (pilot), PFC Duane L. Rhodes (gunner). The plane returned to Midway.
The photographer is visible in the U.S. Navy film by John Ford "The Battle of Midway" and may show the actual sortie against the Japanese Fleet on 4 June 1942.
