A total of 2.3 million new voters registered during the first voter registration weekend held in November 2013 and the second and final voter registration weekend held in February 2014, increasing the number of registered voters to over 25 million. The South African general election to be held on 7 May 2014 after 20 years of democracy will be the first general election in which the "born-free" generation will be eligible to vote.
