Construction crews for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District excavate a temporary embankment Sept. 23, 2015, as work continues on the Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway in Folsom, Calif. The Corps will excavate more than 1 million cubic yards of earth and rock to complete the approach channel, which will connect the reservoir to the new spillway. The project is part of a $900-million cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Central Valley Flood Protection Board and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency to improve the safety of Folsom Dam and reduce flood risk for the Sacramento area.
