Description Trevithick Road Loco 01.jpg |
English:
A replica of
Richard Trevithick
's 1801 road locomotive
Puffing Devill
at the
National Railway Museum
in
York
during the Rail200 Railfest in 2004.
This vehicle is road-legal in Great Britain and is registered with the DVLA with the make "Trevithick" and model "No. 1", although it is limtied to a maximum of 6mph because of its steel-tyred wheels. Despite being constructed for the 2001 bicentenary of the original, no road tax is levied on the replica as if it was truly older than the cut-off. This is apparently because officialdom did not believe that anyone could possibly want to construct and run a new steam-powered vehicle and so no category exists it fits. |
