The print shows a group of five pilot boat sailors/captains sitting around a wooden table. One man is holding a ship model and another is smoking a pipe. On the table there is a small pitcher and another long pipe. On the wall behind them is a calendar with the date of April 17, and to the left is a sign with the signal flags belonging to the various shipping companies of that port.
Print is from after page 140 of “Recent Ideals of American Art,” published by D. Appleton & Co. ca 1888-1890. Melcher’s original oil painting is in the collection of the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, accession number 1960.006. Melcher painted it between 1887-1888. It was exhibited at the Salon in Paris in 1888.
