Summary
Description The American Soldier, 1839.jpg |
English:
US Army soldiers during the Seminole War. In the center foreground is an infantry officer of indeterminate rank, whose only indication of rank was the red sash at his waist. In this conflict the enlisted men were not issued the regular uniform, but instead the fatigue or undress uniform. Officers were free to choose whatever apparel they thought appropriate. A native scout is seen in the left foreground, wearing a red wrap around his head.
