Summary

Description
English: St Margaret's church. St Margaret's church > 865893 > 865908 stands on a hill by its own, a short distance away from the village. "A round tower of flint and pebbles, as the Normans left it except for 15th century battlements, crowns the church, which has an extraordinary thing to show us and presents an extraordinary appearance as we enter" wrote Arthur Mee in "The King's England: Norfolk" in 1940, meaning the big square Norman font > 866037 . Other medieval survivals are a rood screen 865897 - with only traces of the original paintings left - and a wineglass pulpit > 865899 - dated 1450, the panels of which depict St Gregory, St Augustine, St Ambrose and St Jerome and the donors, John Goldalle and his wife. A Jacobean pulpit stands on the opposite side. The most famous name associated with the parish is Horatio Nelson, whose father was rector here. Richard Woodget, Master of the Cutty Sark, is buried in St Margaret's churchyard > 451607 . The church is open every day.
