The figure shows panel A, in which RcsF is not activating signaling and the periplasm is normal in size. In panel B, the periplasm is normal in size but signaling is occurring due to envelope disorder. In panel C, the periplasm has been elongated and the Rcs regulon cannot be activated. In panel D, the periplasm has been elongated but RcsF has lengthened as a correction.
