Summary
Description Raptor, Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia (2456222802).jpg |
We saw this bird from the bus as we made our way through Simien Mountains National Park in the Ethiopian highlands (and I do mean high: elevations of 7,000 to 10,000 feet) in late October. I spent quite a bit of time on Google today looking at photos of marvelous raptors whose ranges include Ethiopia, all to no avail. The closest I came was the Short-toed Eagle, but none of them were as pale as this individual. In fact, except for the Osprey, which this clearly is not, all the large African raptors I could find were considerably darker and/or had crests. Also, and this could have been a function of the other birds' poses when photographed, none of the raptors I looked at on the Web had the lovely feathery legs this guy has. Any suggestions as to who we're looking at here? Amazingly, this magnificent bird was on the same stretch of highway as the Lammergeier and the African White-backed Vulture shown later on in my photostream. Coincidence or carrion? |
