Summary
Description President Eisenhower and AEC Chairman Strauss face questioners at a press conference.jpg |
English:
March 31, 1954 – President Dwight D. Eisenhower and AEC Chairman Lewis L. Strauss face questioners at a press conference. [72-773]
The press conference was held in the Indian Treaty Room of the State, War, and Navy Building in the aftermath of the Castle Bravo thermonuclear test in the Pacific. It was at this conference that Strauss, whose goal was to calm public concern about the power of, and fallout from, the test, declared in response to a question that a single H-bomb of large enough size could destroy the New York City metropolitan area. This only amplified the level of anxiety among the public. |
