Die Portweinzange wird zum Öffnen von Flaschen mit altem Portwein verwendet, wenn der Korken alt und bröckelig ist. Die Zange wird erhitzt, bis sie rotglühend ist, und an den Flaschenhals angelegt. Nach dem Erhitzen des Glases wird Wasser aufgetragen, wodurch das Glas sauber bricht und der gesamte Flaschenhals mitsamt Korken entfernt werden kann. Der Portwein wird durch ein Sieb (feines Netz oder Käsetuch) in einen Dekanter gegossen, um Sediment und mögliche Glassplitter zu entfernen.
English:
Port tongs are used for opening bottles of vintage port wine when the cork is old and prone to crumbling. The tongs are heated until red hot and applied to the neck of the bottle. After the glass is heated, water is applied, causing the glass to break cleanly, allowing the entire neck of the bottle to be removed, cork and all. The port is poured through a strainer (fine mesh or cheesecloth) into a decanter, to remove sediment and any possible pieces of glass.
