Pinafore_engraving,_ILN_1878.jpg
Description Pinafore engraving, ILN 1878.jpg |
English:
An artist's impression of the 1878 production of
H.M.S. Pinafore
, Act II, by
D. H. Friston
. The characters shown, from left to right, are Little Buttercup, Captain Corcoran with boatcloak, Josephine, Ralph, Sir Joseph and Dick Deadeye.
Josephine, Ralph and Sir Joseph appear to be depicted in the scene that takes place around Ralph's line: "She is my ship of life", however, Captain Corcoran is not on stage at that time (he has already taken off the boatcloak and has been sent off by Sir Joseph at that point); so the drawing is not of any actual scene from the opera, but merely an illustration of the major characters at various points in Act II The illustration was first published in The Illustrated London News , 8 June 1878. It can also be found in Gilbert & Sullivan: The D'Oyly Carte Years , by Robin Wilson and Frederic Lloyd, p. 21 (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1984). |
