Statue of the biologist
Pierre-Joseph van Beneden
at the Pierre-Joseph van Benedenlaan in Mechelen, Belgium (birth place of the figure). The statue was inaugurated at 24 July 1898 (inscription on the back side of the monument). On the front you can read "P.J. VAN BENEDEN 1809-1894". At the sides you can read, in Dutch at the one side and in French on the other "To the world-famous naturalist and professor". At the side of the Dutch inscription you may read "Jul. Lagae" beneath the figure's feet. This is the name of Jules Lagae (1862-1931), the Flemish sculptor and creator of the statue.

Frontaal kan men lezen: "P.J. VAN BENEDEN 1809-1894". Aan de zijden kan men in het Frans aan de ene kant en in het Nederlands andere kant lezen: "Aan den wereldberoemden natuurkundige en hoogleraar". Aan de zijde van het Nederlandstalige opschrift kan men net onder de voeten van de figuur "Jul. Lagae" lezen. Dit is de naam van Jules Lagae (1862-1931), de (West)-Vlaamse beeldhouwer en schepper van dit standbeeld.
