Description

ID#: 5577

This electron micrograph depicts a number of morphologic variants found in the parapox Orf virus common to sheep and goats. The criss cross pattern is an artefact caused by superimposition of images of the top and bottom surfaces of the virus

The Orf virus is a “species-type”, belonging to the genus of viruses known as Parapoxviridae. It can live in soil for a prolonged time, and can cause skin infections in its animal hosts. It is zoonotic, producing skin lesions in infected humans as well.
