This photograph shows Orson Welles during the filming of The Stranger , filmed between late September and late November 1945 at Samuel Goldwyn Studios and Universal Studios ( AFI Catalogue of Feature Films ). Welles is in costume as the character Charles Rankin (Franz Kindler) that he portrays in the film, which he also directed. The AP notation on the face of the photo refers to a Bob Thomas column speculating on Welles's possible candidacy for the U.S. Senate. The photo has no copyright markings on it as can be seen in the original uploaded scan.
