Summary
Description North West Yorkshire English vowel chart.svg |
English:
Vowels of North West Yorkshire English depicted on a vowel chart. The vowel space is compressed downwards, with FACE, GOAT, SQUARE and THOUGHT being realized as monophthongs that are more open than in many other dialects such as RP or Scottish English. FLEECE and GOOSE are wide diphthongs with an unrounded central starting point as in cockney and Australia. The open front vowels vary from front to central and this includes some tokens of PRICE (Wilhelm 2018:4–6). Diphthongal PRICE and CHOICE are not shown on the chart.
