La position des ailerons octogonaux (qui devainet permettre un meilleur contrôle en roulis) est évidemment erronée. On les voit d'ailleurs dans la bonne position sur l'image ci-dessous :
Il convient de noter que, sans ces ailerons octogonaux, Santos Dumont avait effectué quelques petits vols le mois précédent (à Bagatelle également), mais sans la présence de commissaires pour les certifier.
Le Petit Journal évoque dans son texte cette voiture qui emporte les commissaires chargés de certifier le vol. L'un deux porte une "pile d'assiettes" qu'il doit lancer au sol à l'endroit où le 14 bis aura quitté le sol et à l'endroit où il l'aura retrouvé. Entre ces deux assiettes, les commissaires mesureront 220 m (parcourus en 21 secondes, ce qui donne une vitesse moyenne en vol de 37,7 km/h).
