The map shows the path of retreat by a Union army led by General George Crook in the Second Battle of Kernstown. This U.S. Civil War battle and subsequent retreat took place on July 24-26, 1864. The retreat path, mostly along the turnpike, is marked on the map. Confederate cavalry pursued.
