Original caption "GARMISCH, Germany - Ambassador Johnnie Carson speaks at an academic conference on "The Evolution of African Militaries" while General William Ward, commander of U.S. Africa Command, listens. The event was co-hosted by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. AFRICOM on February 7-8 in Garmisch, Germany. Carson is former U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Zimbabwe and Uganda, and currently the National Intelligence Officer for Africa on the National Intelligence Council. More than 100 people attended, including African academic researchers, U.S. Embassy staff, and U.S. AFRICOM personnel. The conference discussed the roles of African militaries in their countries, to include their history and their current role in the African Union and in peacekeeping missions.
