Description JimJeffords.png |
English:
Jim Jeffords served as a Vermont State Senator from 1967-1969, Attorney General of Vermont from 1969-1973, United States Congressman from Vermont's at-large district from 1975-1989, and as United States Senator from Vermont from 1989-2007. On May 24, 2001, Jeffords switched from the Republican party to an Independent, and he said he would caucus with the Democrats in the Senate. Before he switched parties, the Senate was controlled by Republicans with 50 Republicans, 50 Democrats, and Vice President Dick Cheney casting the tie vote in favor of the Republicans. However, after Jeffords's switch, the Democratic party retook control of the United States Senate. Jeffords was born in 1934, and he died in 2014.
