Summary
Description Exeter Cathedral (St. Peter) (15207656710).jpg | The tomb of Walter Bronescombe, Bishop of Exeter, (d:1280) at Exeter Cathedral (St. Peter), 06/14/14. Bronescombe began the rebuilding of the Norman Cathedral in the 1260's. The black basalt effigy dates from his death and retains much of its original paint. The chest-tomb and canopy was added in the 15th Century to match that of Edmund Stafford nearby. On a shield held by an angel at the feet of the bishop (and also at the top of the arch on a shield held by two angels) are shown the arms of Branscombe: Or, on a chevron sable three quatrefoils or two keys in chief argent a sword in base argent (per Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.473). The arms on the front of the chest-tomb at far right are Fortescue. |
