Eilmer of Malmesbury , or Elmer the flying monk. Eilmer was one of the first people to attempt to fly when he attached wings to his arms and jumped from the west tower of Malmesbury Abbey some time early in the 11th century. He managed to glide approximately 200m but broke both legs in the processs. He is shown here, commemorated in an Edwardian stained glass window installed at the west end of the current 14th century Abbey, in Malmesbury England.
