English: In 1909 Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin and his son were the scientists in a four-man team commissioned by John D. Rockefeller to reconnoiter the vast and little-known Manchu Empire of China as a potential site for the humanitarian projects of the nascent Rockefeller Foundation . From left: Ernest DeWitt Burton ( American Baptist biblical scholar), Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin (American geologist), Joseph Beech ( American Methodist missionary working in Szechwan ), Y. T.
