The mouth plays a role in digestion. Digestion begins when food enters the mouth. Three salivary glands—the sublingual gland, the submandibular gland, and the parotid gland —secrete enzymes, such as salivary amylase that partially digest food into a soft, moist, round lump called Bolus. Muscles in the pharynx swallow the food, pushing it into the esophagus. The epiglottis prevents food from entering the trachea during swallowing.
Esophagus a muscular tube that passes food by squeezing and pushing (peristalsis) down to the stomach.
Sigmoid Colon
a large organ located above and in front of the stomach. It filters toxins from the blood, and makes bile (which breaks down fats) and some blood proteins.
the first part of the small intestine; it is C-shaped and runs from the stomach to the jejunum.
