Deutsch:
Darmstadts
, dem Hauptort der
Obergrafschaft Katzenelnbogens
(s.
Sankt Goar
).
English:
The arms already appear on the oldest known seal of the city, known since 1380. The upper half shows a lesser lion, derived from the arms of the
Counts of Katzenelnbogen
, who acquired the area in the 13th century. Saint Goar was the capital of the Lower County of Katzenelnbogen. They probably also granted the city rights around 1250-60 (look
Sankt Goar
). The lower half shows a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis, similar to other cities in the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen, the are pertaining to the Patrocinium of Virgin Mary of Darmstadt.
