Während die Hirschstange auf die Herrschaft Württemberg hinweist, ist für den gleichfalls seit 1468 in den Siegeln nachweisbaren Baum keine besondere Bedeutung bekannt. Die beiden Wappenfiguren erschienen von Anfang an im Schild dieses ältesten bekannten Dorfwappens aus der ursprünglichen Grafschaft Württemberg. Die Wappenfarben sind seit dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts nachweisbar. Nach der am 31. Dezember 1973 erfolgten Vereinigung der durch das 1971 eingegliederte Schozach vergrößerten früheren Gemeinde Ilsfeld mit Auenstein nahm die neue Gemeinde die Wappentradition ihrer gleichnamigen Vorgängerin wieder auf. Am 24. Januar 1978 wurde das Wappen und die Flagge vom Landratsamt verliehen.
