Die Wappen wurde 1890 vom preußischen Staatsministerium genehmigt. Das Wappen geht auf das Wappen der Grafen von Gerolstein-Blankenheim zurück und lässt sich erstmals 1567 im Siegel der Schöffen von Gerolstein nachweisen. Die Stadt Gerolstein führt das Wappen seit etwa 1890.

The arms were granted in 1890. They are derived from the arms of the counts of Blankenheim-Gerolstein and are nearly identical to the arms of
Blankenheim (Ahr)
. Gerhard von Blankenheim founded Gerolstein in 1330, and the village received city rights already in 1336. The counts of Blankenheim-Gerolstein ruled the village until 1423.
