Examination of the teams and scores on the scoreboard indicates the date as August 26, 1914 , vs. N.Y. Giants, after the Cardinals won the first game of a doubleheader, 1-0. The Cardinals and Giants were in the thick of the pennant race along with the Boston Braves (who eventually won the pennant). The large crowd spilled onto the field between games and Giants manager McGraw strenuously objected. The field was cleared and the Giants won the second game 4-0. [1]
