Description
Español: La obra representa la conversión de San Francisco de Borja (1510-1572), marqués de Lombay y luego IV duque de Gandía, tras contemplar el cadáver putrefacto de la emperatriz Isabel de Portugal , esposa del emperador Carlos I de España . La emperatriz falleció en Toledo el día 1 de mayo de 1539, siendo su cadáver trasladado a Granada , ciudad en la que se desarrolló la escena representada en el cuadro. Cuando el duque contempló que el cadáver de la emperatriz, cuya belleza había cautivado a toda la Corte castellana, se había descompuesto por causa del calor del viaje, el noble se decidió a «Nunca más, nunca más servir a señor que se me pueda morir», ingresando pocos años después en la Orden de los jesuitas , fundada pocos años atrás por San Ignacio de Loyola y de la que llegaría a ser general.
