Summary

Description
English: Columbus Circle , New York looking north, with the Columbus Monument in the foreground.

On the right is the corner of Central Park , with Central Park West running north-east. On the other side of the street, level with the statue of Columbus is the sign of the Tichenor-Grand company which sold horses and carriages in the new 7-storey building dating from 1906, as well as providing accommodation for 300 horses. Immediately below and behind the sign was a huge double-height rooftop equestrian arena where horse shows took place.
In the center is Broadway , looking towards Lincoln Square . Below the sign advertising Sunny Brook Whiskey is the New Circle Theatre at 1825 Broadway, and next to it is Faust's oyster bar with a vertical sign in German lettering. Moving left to the north-west, at the junction of W. 59th Street (now blocked off) is the Circle Hotel.
On the far left is the Pabst Grand Circle Hotel and the Majestic Theatre at 5 Columbus Circle. The Majestic, run by the Shuberts , was 'dark' from some time in June until 30th August, [1] which may be the reason for the sign on the theatre roof advertising Eddy Foy Sr. in The Orchid and The Road to Yesterday by Beulah Marie Dix , both running at the Shuberts' Herald Square Theatre at the other end of Broadway. The former play opened on April 8th, 1907, [2] and the latter finished its run in August 1907, [3] which may date the photo to some time between June and August 1907.
