Object history | Coat of arms of Betty Boothroyd, The Baroness Boothroyd (1929-2023), Speaker of the House of Commons from 1992 to 2000. This achievement was used from 2005 to 2023. She bears this achievement on a lozenge (as is traditional for a woman), atop the lozenge is a green forget-me-not bow or lovers' knot which indicates that she never married. Above the lovers' knot is the coronet of a British baron (she was created a life peer, taking as her title Baroness Boothroyd of Sandwell in the County of West Midlands in 2001), and below the lozenge hangs the ribbon and insignia of the Order of Merit (to which she was appointed in 2005). | ||||||||||
