Description
English: "The Washington Schoolmaster." An editorial cartoon about the Coal strike of 1902 , a strike by the United Mine Workers of America in the anthracite coal fields of eastern Pennsylvania. In the cartoon a sign on the wall states, "Primary Classroom for Coal Barons," and a world map shows a disproportionately large state of Pennsylvania. President Theodore Roosevelt intervened in the strike, and the cartoon depicts him as poised to dole out punishment to industry; he is holding a switch labeled "Federal Authority." Shown on the bench are industry leaders: financier J. P. Morgan; George F. Baer, President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad; and two coal company executives, John Markle (G.B. Markle & Co.) and T.P. Fowler (Scranton Coal Co. & Elk Hill Coal & Iron Co.).
