Description |
English:
Alexey
Orlov
-Chesmensky Riding His Stallion Bars I. There is a problem here with both the image and the title. "Bars" is wrong. Although it's a reasonable English cognate for the horse's name in Russian, "Bars" actually means "leopard," a much better name for a swift horse. I suspect this translation / transliteration mistake has gone unchallenged for decades. The image is wrong because the Russian title indicates a mounted rider. I have literary confirmation of both points in Gilyarovsky's Moscow and Muscovites in the chapter "Sukharevka."
