Pillbox hat - believed to be part of an Auckland Rifle Volunteers sergeants uniform associated with Sergt. Robert Coombes maker- W. Anderson and Son, George St., Edinburgh, Scotland form- pillbox forage cap; straight sides and flat circular crown detail- black ( navy blue) woollen fabric; wide black band with narrow braid borders; on crown knob of woven fabric with black braid loops; red satin quilted lining with maker's na,e printed in gilt markings- maker's trademark inside crown- gilt lettering- (coat of arms) - W. - SON and SON - 14, GEORGE ST. - EDINBURGH

Notes | Forage cap believed to be part of associated with Sergeant Robert Coombes, Auckland Rifle Volunteers (4 Coy). Note that, although Sergt Coombes did serve during the Waikato Campaigns the buttons on the red tunic date from a later period. The period of the cap has not yet been established. Robert Coombes joined No 4 (City) Coy of the Auckland Rifle Volunteers in the early 1860s, with the rank of Sergeant. He was under fire at both engagements at Wairoa in September 1863, and was awarded the New Zealand medal (one of 108 awarded to the Auckland Rifle Volunteers) on 4 November 1873. He is also listed (R Stowers) as having served during the Waikato Campaign with the Auckland Militia. Robert Coombes is noted on the Auckland District Highway Roll as having 4 acres of land in Howick. This may have referred to his military land grant, however, a Robert Coombes is also recorded on the 1849 Auckland Jury List as- Robert Coombes, Carpenter, Howick, and is also recorded in 'The New Zealander's' list of voters (1858) as - Robert Coombes, Carpenter, Waiheki (sic). | |||||||||||||||||||||||
