Summary
Description Bodhisattva Manjushri seated in lalitasana, from China, Jin Dynasty, 12th century CE. British Museum.jpg |
English:
White marble figure of Bodhisattva Manjushri seated in lalitasana. This figure is one of about 20 carvings, all with architectural back-slabs, probably made for a pagoda in north-west Dingxian. The region was famous for its white marble sculpture in the 6th to 8th centuries CE. In the 12th century CE, the choice of marble may reflect the prosperity from the Ding kilns at the neighboring Jianci village. From Dingxian, Hebei province, the People's Republic of China. Jin Dynasty, 12th century CE. On display at the British Museum in London.
