Woodcut from Swift's Battle of the Books. Various modern and ancient authors are represented as knights with pages as emblems. The angel of Fame trumpets the battle and the stakes of the battle. Note that Fame has two trumpets. One calls forth good fame, and the other (meant to protrude from her posterior) blows the sour notes of infamy. In the top left corner are the spider and the bee who are discussed in the text.
