Summary

Description

"Aviation Bergère", on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

The giltwood frame is by L'Ecole Boulle, a Paris furniture manufacturer established in 1886. The upholstery was manufactured by Tapisserie des Gobelins, a Paris fabric company established in 1662. The design of the upholstery is by Robert Bonfils (1886–1971), a French designer.

A bergère is a French word meaning an armchair whose sides are enclosed. The upholstery is wool with silk. This work dates to some time between 1922 and 1925. The upholstery itself is more specifically dated to 1923.

The design celebrates the Allied victory in World War I, and incorporates traditional elements (a wreath, a garland, the Crois de Guerre, a shield, the colors of the French flag) along with bouquets of flowers (an Art Nouveau touch). The biplane made its debut in World War I, and was used by Bonfils as an exemplar of French military might and innovation -- which helped win the war.
