Description 1981 Joe Louis Congressional Gold Medal front.jpg | U.S. Congressional Gold Medal for Joe Louis. Original caption states "he obverse of the medal features a portrait of Mr. Louis in a boxing stance with the inscription “JOE LOUIS 1914-1981” appearing in the left field of the medal. The reverse features the belt that Joe Louis won in 1937. The belt consists of a large center buckle with side buckles. On the center buckle is featured the American Eagle and the words “The Ring Championship Belt Won by Joe Louis”. The wording on the two smaller side buckles appearing on the medal cannot be read. In the background above the championship belt is a pair of boxing gloves. “ACT OF CONGRESS 1981” appears below the belt and the border of the reverse is surrounded by the inscription “WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP 1937-1948”." |
