The Doherty Medal was first established in 1910 for the National Electric Light Association by Henry L. Doherty who donated the annual award "For the most meritorious paper presented before a company section" in promotion of the electric industry. The award went continued up until the NELA was replaced by the Edison Electric Institute in 1933.
