Summary
Description 1897 freight dock 01 - CTVRW Riverbed St Cleveland.jpg |
English:
Riverbed Street freight dock of the Cleveland, Terminal and Valley Railway (formerly the Valley Railway) in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.
In 1896, the CT&V built a second freight depot and docks on the Cuyahoga River. It was located on Riverbed Street NW, between Main Avenue and Cathan Avenue. The city of Cleveland, however, wished to widen the Cuyahoga River by 80 feet (24 m) at this point. The city and the railway came to an agreement whereby the city closed West River Street and give 80 feet (24 m) of land to the railroad. The 80 feet (24 m) of land on which the existing CT&V docks sat were removed to allow for the widened river channel. The railway agreed to pay an assessment of about $16,500 ($500,000 in 2017 dollars) for the improvements, and the city agreed to rebuild the CT&V's docks. The rebuilt docks opened in 1897. They featured a McMyler rotary car dumper, which was capable of automatically dumping 30 hopper cars of coal an hour. A McMyler rotary hoist transferred coal from the docks into the holds of steamships, which used the coal for fuel. |
