She was born in Stockholm, and was raised in Åmot, Brunskog, outside Arvika. She is the daughter of Czech film director David Jan Novotný and Swedish artist Barbro Hedström.^[2] At a young age, she participated in Vår teater, a children's theater in Stockholm.^[3]

She has three children, including a son (born 2022) with actor Alexander Skarsgård.^[4][5][6]
