Political party in Romania

S.O.S. Romania (Romanian: S.O.S. România) is a right-wing populist and Romanian nationalist political party.

Quick Facts Abbreviation, President ...

The party was founded in November 2021 by Maricel Viziteu, Adeluța and Gabriel Gib, the latter being a former member of the Romanian Socialist Party (PSR).[15] However, it became known on the Romanian political landscape in May 2022, after Senator Diana Iovanovici Șoșoacă, elected on the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) list, joined the party, and later became its leader.[16]

S.O.S. Romania is a nationalist, conservative, right-wing populist and Eurosceptic party. It has been described as being more radical[17] than AUR and was accused by the press of having close ties to Russia.[18][6] Șoșoacă also demanded Romanian withdrawal from the European Union[19] and is critical of NATO as well.[20] However, on the party's website, it claims that it opposes "Russian and Chinese dictatorships" and that it supports Romania's EU membership, preferring to be called Eurorealist rather than Eurosceptic.[21] The party is also irredentist, demanding Ukraine to return to Romania the territories annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, which are today part of Ukraine.[22] Due to this, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Șoșoacă, the party's president.[23]

Political analyst and former politician Miron Mitrea claims that the party has 5-6% in the election polls, as of July 2023.[23][24] Șoșoacă replied, claiming that it is more popular than 5-6% and told people not to trust the polls.[17]

The online presence of the Constanta organization is leading the party presence in most of the online searches and seems to be the strongest presence yet to be observed in the whole party activity.

Senator Diana Ivanovici Șoșoacă is the main figure in the party and represents 90% of the main media and online presence observed.

On 13 October 2023, Europe Elects revealed SOS Romania's intention to join the Identity and Democracy Party.[25]
